Great Language Quiz
Saturday 15.30 Aula A9
Peter Whiley
This year we are taking a break from Great Debates and Panel Discussions, and we are aiming for an event with the emphasis on fun and learning. Stand-by, therefore, for a quiz to whet your appetites!
We are presenting an event which will be interactive, with a team format. You, the audience, will be invited to take part in teams, just like a pub quiz, so you can hide your inadequacies/failings, but test your knowledge of the English language. For the winners, there will be some impressive prizes. However, the overall aim is for you all to learn about new and forgotten words, have a laugh or two, and use ideas from the quiz with your own students back in your classrooms.
Language is ever-changing and it is difficult to keep up with all of these developments, exciting though they may well be.
How much do you know? You would be surprised by what you do in fact know, so come to this memorable event and test yourselves with some of the major features of the English language. Names, for instance, are popular, and become verbs sometimes! This will feature in one section of the quiz. We shall also include an unusual translation round to involve Polish in our quiz. Foreign influences upon the English language will also be explored, remembering, of course, that English gobbles up many foreign words every year, and uses French terms, for instance, as a form of sophistication. Elements of humour will also appear in a specific guise, but will not be revealed just yet! However, brushing up on Cockney dialect, acronyms, and teenage slang might just be advisable!
Without giving away too many details, I hope I have given you a taste of what to expect. The quiz commences directly after the AGM in the Aula A9 at 3.30 on Saturday, and will last one hour. For those who are really shy, you are welcome to come and be passive observers, but we hope that most of you who attend will indeed take part.
So see you there, and in a difficult year for everyone, I hope that this event will be an enjoyable experience, and a useful one, too!
